Khajjar is a hill station in Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh, India, located approximately 24 km from Dalhousie. Khajjiar can be reached from Dalhousie, the nearest town and hill station, by bus in an hour. This Hill station is also known as 'The mini Switzerland of India' because of its extreme beauty, sloppy Terrains and a number of beautiful lakes.
History-
In July, 1992 ,Mr. Willy T. Blazer, Vice Counselor and Head of Chancery of Switzerland in India has a major role in bringing this beautiful place on the tourist map. He himself give the name 'mini Switzerland ' to this place and put a sign board which shows the distance of khajjar from the Switzerland.
Trekking :-
It is one of the best place for trekking. Khajjar has a 3.5 km long terrain between Khajjiar to Dainkund. Its also very comfortable for children as the environment, weather and surroundings are very favorable.
How to visit:-
Its located in Chamba district, and the nearest major town is Dalhousie. Generally people go by there own vehicle or a rented one. Bus service is limited and timing changes according to demand so i suggest you to better rent a vehicle .
Places to Visit:-
1) Khajjiar Lake
This is the place where the famous scenes of the Bollywood movies are shot. The song in the famous movie "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" Starring 'Shahrukh khan', 'kajol' is from this same place.This lake is a holy place as it is linked with the Khajji Nag Temple.
2) Khajji Nag Temple:-
This temple is one of the ancient temple in India built around 1200 A.D. It is dedicated to Khajji nag, here Nag mean The King Cobra, so Khajji Nag is the King of serpents and worshiped all over India.
this temple is linked with the ' Mahabharata' , the Great war between 'Kaurau' and 'Pandava' happened aroung 5000 years ago.
3) Khajjiar Villages
The villages in khajjar are quite beautiful.Small - tiny homes in the tall Deodar tree forest. The Apple , Orange and other fruit trees are very common here, you can enjoy the natural fruits direct from the tree here.generally children like this place very much due to its lust green terrains, orchards and a very free peaceful environment to roam around . The villagers are very kind and helpful , you can feel the real India here.
4) Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary
Kalatop Khajjiar Sanctuary is a 30.69 km² animal sanctuary in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, India. Well this is more than expected , this is a very maintained , full with Deodar trees and wild animals. Beer, Black marten,Leopard, Deer , Goral,Jackals and many more..
Birds in sanctuary includes 1. Eurasian Jay 2. Whitewinged Black Bird 3. Black Headed Jay 4. Chesnut Billed Rock Thrush 5. Blackheaded Jay. 6. Grey Headed Cannery Flycatcher.
so, finally i just say its the best place to visit .
